COUNCIL MEETING

Introduction / Location

Bled – the romantic Alpine soul tucked away amidst picturesque mountains – holds an ancient treasure: an island in the middle of an Alpine lake.  Its charm has made it a symbol for centuries and to guests from all over the world love to return. On the island in the middle of the lake, the ancient Slavs worshipped Živa, goddess of love and fertility. Pilgrims later came to the church of St Mary on the island. A thousand years ago, on 10 April 1004, the town of Bled was mentioned for the first time.

At that distant time, a Roman tower already stood at the top of the cliff rising 100 m vertically above the lake, and it still forms part of the mighty castle that now houses a museum collection. The town flourished in the Middle Ages due to pilgrims, and these were replaced in the 19th century by the first tourists. The Swiss hydropathist, Arnold Rikli, discovered that the gentle climate and the lake and thermal waters are a source of good health and well-being. The local people supplemented the health spa offer with guest houses and hotels.

The town, already famous at the beginning of the 20th century as the most beautiful health spa of the then Austrian empire, attracted the European aristocratic elite. After WWII, one of the most attractive state residences of the former regime was located in Bled. Many of the world’s most important people thus enjoyed the beauties of Bled. And now, for decades already, pilgrims of a new age have been discovering this town.

Cosmopolitan seekers of diversity and beauty, of relaxation and inspiration, tranquillity and the challenges of sport will find here a multitude of opportunities. Walking and coaching trails around the lake, traditional boats, ringing the island’s wishing bell, the castle treasures, the nearby ski pistes, mountain trails, golf courses, hunting, fishing, the casino, congress facilities – all these are but fragments of Bled’s attraction. And those who experience it, long for it again and again….

This is why we propose Bled for a location of the council meeting.

The meeting

The Council meeting will precede the 8th ECM. We will welcome the guest in the early hours on 4 July 2020. After lunch, the meeting will commence in the Hotel Kompas Bled. Meeting facilities will be available for 4 and 5 July, while a full board will be organized at the hotel for all meeting participants.

The next day, on 5th July 2020, a coach will be organized for participants to escort them to Portorož, where the congress will be held.

We expect 70 guests to attend the council meeting.

The meeting venue

The meeting will be organized in Hotel Kompas Bled, which is distinguished by its broad offer of meeting rooms and business services. There are five halls in the hotel, which can suit many various business meetings and the organizing committee believes the Council Meeting will fit nicely into the area.

All of the hotel’s function rooms have natural daylight and are air-conditioned. Modern technical equipment supported by on-site technicians enables smooth running of meetings. If needed, the hotel offers several facilities, which can be used for mini-meetings if the discussions will be split into smaller groups.

POSSIBLE ACTIVITIES

The congress venue offers opportunities for almost all kinds of activities. The Piran and Portorož promenades are ideal for walking or jogging, while the  warm sea is inviting for swimmers, paddlers, and anyone who wants to relax or play in the sea.

A marina with sail boats is situated in the adjoining town Lucija, guaranteeing a good starting point for sailing in the Adriatic.

The Istrian hinterlands offer plenty of opportunities for cycling (on or off road), and the area is connected to a cycling path running along the old railway line from Trieste to Pula, the Parenzana.

SUPing has become increasingly popular in the area, as the calm sea offers ideal conditions, while windier days attract kite surfers, wind surfers and other sport enthusiasts.

Cycling, roller skating, longboarding and skateboarding are often just a mode of transportation for people living on the Slovene coastline.

EXCURSIONS

All participants and accompanying persons will  be able to enjoy nearby attractions. Organised excursions will take them to destinations such as:
