Description

Invasive alien species represent a major threat to global biodiversity. The European Parliament and the Council are preparing a regulation on the prevention and management of the introduction and spread of invasive alien species. Different approaches for the monitoring of invasive species exist currently. The aim of our study is to demonstrate the possibility of applying biometric technic (iris recognition) for invasive alien animal species identification. This would enable us to follow the eventual movements of the adoptive gold fish or turtle. The goal of the study is to develop software for biometric reader by capturing visible light digital images of the iris pattern of an animal eye. This innovative use of already existing method will be checked by performing research on the morphology of iris pattern of 2 pilot groups of species: gold fish (Carassius auratus) and terrapins (Trachemys sp). Project »biometric reader as a tool for traceability of invasive alien animals« is financed by Ad Futura fund of Slovene human resources development and scholarship fund.
