Description

Perfect nonlinear functions, also known as planar mappings, share a great deal of their their properties with another combinatorial concept known as bent functions. It turns out that hese different concepts, for instance behaving differently for different prime charactestics of their prime fields, are almost identical notions, in particular this is true if the component functions of planar mappings are considered. However, whereas for bent functions there exist diverse construction methods, generating bent functions of varying degree, this is not the case for planar mappings. This talk will review the similarities between the two concepts and discuss some open problems related to the construction of planar mappings, in particular the problem of designing nonquadratic planar mappings is briefly addressed. If time allows some relations to graph theory will be mentioned.
